My Comments

  • Hi again Eric, Yes, that's right - really the cost of unsold domains should be included, as not all domains are sold. This is somewhat offset by parking revenue. As I said, this is not really a strategy the should be followed until you've got a bit of experience in the market. I develop websites too, and enjoy it. You're right that building something can be more rewarding in certain ways. The thing with domaining is that you can really scale it - you can own thousands of domains with little time commitment. Really, no matter how good you are at delegating work, the number of websites you can develop and run is finite and you'll be working long hours if you have a lot of websites. I do think a lot of (most?) domainers do both - domaining and web development.
  • Hi Eric, Thanks for your thoughtful comments. Regarding overfishing, to a large extent your comment is true. I do think it's best for someone new to the market to start by buying domains in the aftermarket rather than registering new domains. That being said, I just sold a newly registered domain for $2,000, so it is still possible. But it's certainly not easy and I'm sure many of my newly registered domains won't sell. Type in traffic - that's a funny thing. It seems to be growing rather than shrinking. People want to go where they want to go, not where a search engine tells them to go. But you're right - there is a lot of "browser hijacking" going on where the ISP takes you to their ad filled page rather than where you want to go. While this certainly has some effect, type in traffic is just one small factor out of many affecting the valuation of a domain. Development - yes, you'll generally make more money developing a domain rather than parking it. However, it is a completely different skill set involved and becomes more like running a business rather than investing your money. I also think that, at least at this point in time, the ROI on time and money invested is higher in domaining than in website development.
  • Hi Stevie, The best place to start is a whois lookup like: http://whois.domaintools.com/ Type your domain name in there and click "lookup." That will tell you who the domain is registered with (under "registrar"). Contact the registrar to find out how to access your domain name.
  • Thanks! If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me.
  • Thanks Paul!
