My Comments

  • Hi, Paul, thanks for reading my guide to ETFs on Work.com. Both exchange traded funds and mutual funds charge an annual management fee based on your amount in the fund, but ETFs charge lower fees typically. If you want to buy or sell shares in an ETF, you pay your broker a flat transaction fee (often $10 or less) each time, regardless of the number of shares. "Load" mutual funds charge to open or close an account, "no load" funds don't charge, and ongoing fees can vary or even phase out over time, so check the rules. Mutual funds also typically have minimum investments and charge fees if you want to sell shares before a holding period of some months. ETFs are more like stocks: Buy or sell a little or a lot whenever you want. So to compare costs, take a look at the amount of money you want to put in and how actively you want to move it around and, as I mentioned in the guide, the real points of comparison are between ETFs and index mutual funds, the most direct competitors in terms of fees and investment strategy.
  • Here's another way to go: Buy from Fortune Magazine's annual list of most accountable companies.
  • Thanks! FotoLabels.com looks like a very slick way to handle small-run printing.
  • I recently learned that my dry cleaner uses video surveillance to record what clothing customers drop off. In case of a dispute over lost clothing, the first thing they do is review the recording from their camera.
  • Closing a Business - 06/13/2007
For a light look at ending a business, check out www.ihatemypartner.com , particularly the videos. Site is sponsored by The Shotgun Fund, a Canadian company that specializes in financing business dissolutions: http://www.shotgunfund.com/
  • Something new to watch for: Fon (www.fon.com) sells you a wireless router to use at home, then when you leave home, you can get wireless service off the routers of other Fon subscribers for free.
  • Here's some advice from someone who's hired dog walkers and sitters -- tell your customers your plan for days when you are sick or unable to come to the house. If you have a substitute walker or sitter, bring them around to introduce them to the pets and the owners. I happened to be at home one day when a substitute came by -- imagine my surprise when I saw a complete stranger walk into my kitchen. Remember, you are going to be entrusted with the keys to people's houses.
  • Another way to approach this: Bid on an existing domain name that's expiring. Enom.com (http://www.enom.com/auctions/default.asp) is one place to go.
  • What can I tell just by holding a bill up to the light? Or is that method out of date?
  • Kerry, really useful guide about a problem I wouldn't have thought about if you hadn't pointed it out. It strikes me that these steps could apply to other kinds of disasters like snow emergencies or earthquakes. I'd like to see the pandemic checklist from Health and Human Services but it looks like they changed the page because the link doesn't work . Can you add the link again? Thanks!
  • Resume Search - 10/04/2006
Another free resume database is Craigslist, particularly if your'e looking for a local, entry-level or part-time candidates.
  • I just found out about three sites that will let you create a good-looking classified ad from a template then place it on the major classified Web sites: vflyer, postlets and mpire. Check them out.
